Tech in Asia dated the launch October 8. Magnific, the Málaga company that used to be Freepik, shipped Magnific One with an in-house art-direction layer that runs before the pixels: composition, style, lighting, camera, texture. Unite.AI’s write-up the same day is the product tour. Draft mode fans one idea into a grid. Final mode is the deliverable, 2K High by default, and that is where a Brand Kit actually applies.
We already priced the Seedream 5 / GPT Image 1.5 / Flux 2 Max pile-up as a model war. GPT Image 1.5 and Flux 2 Max still exist. This week is not another beauty contest. It is a credit table and a cutoff: unlimited 2K and 4K in the desktop app through October 15.
Draft is a grid. Final is the invoice
Melissa Diago, Magnific’s creative technologist, wrote the prompting guide Unite.AI quotes. Draft turns one idea into 4, 8, or 16 directions. Fewer images in the grid means more detail in each tile. Tech in Asia says a Draft grid of 8 or 16 options costs the credits of one image. Hold those two sentences together: the exploration pass is cheap relative to Final, and it is still a pass you can waste if you never pick a tile.
Final is one image. Default 2K High. Up to 4K and Max. Brand Kit, Unite.AI says, takes effect in Final, not as a sticker you slap on later. If your team’s habit is “generate 40 Midjourney v7s and pick in Slack,” Draft is the closest analog. If your habit is “one hero for the homepage,” you are in Final whether you like the price or not.
Auto Layers, per Tech in Asia, can split a result into editable layers. That is a finishing claim. It is not Photoshop. Try it on one campaign image before you tell a brand team the PSD era is over.
Styles are separate from Brand Kit. Upload one to five reference images that share a palette, texture, or technique. The guide says the look holds across Draft and Final. That is how you keep a film-grain test from contaminating the kit you already approved.
180 credits is 2K High
VentureBeat’s launch story printed the meter.
- High-quality 2K: 180 credits
- High-quality 4K: 250 credits
- Max-quality 2K: 600 credits
- Max-quality 4K: 1,000 credits
Using Magnific’s published annual subscription rates and credit allotments, VentureBeat translates that to about $0.12 to $0.73 per image if you burn the whole annual pile. Actual cost depends on plan, leftover credits, and whether you live in Draft.
Annual individual plans, before tax, billed yearly: Premium $14.50 a month, Premium+ $33.75, Pro Starter $82.50. Magnific One is on all paid plans, Tech in Asia says, across web, desktop, mobile, and Magnific MCP.
VentureBeat’s comparison table is the honest neighborhood, not a bake-off Magnific already won:
- Runway Gen-4 Image via API: $0.05–$0.08 per image
- FLUX.2 Pro via Fal.ai: from $0.03 per image at 1 megapixel; $0.045 for 1920×1080 without input references
- Midjourney: $10–$120 a month, GPU-time rather than a universal per-image sticker
- Adobe Firefly Custom Models: custom enterprise pricing
Magnific cites a 68.5% private blind-comparison win rate. VentureBeat marks it company-reported and not independently verified. Treat it like a press number. If your art director needs a side-by-side, run 20 prompts against Flux 2 Max and GPT Image 1.5 on your own kit. Do not paste 68.5 into a procurement deck.
Brand Kit is the product. The model is the engine
The product page, as Unite.AI summarizes it, is three steps: set up a Brand Kit, create, finish with Magnific’s editing tools. The editing guide publishes eight short lines for relighting and cleanup, including yellowed whites, exact text, and changing only the light. Those lines also run on images you upload. That is the “we are a retouch shop too” pitch.
Brand consistency is why a team would pay 180 credits instead of $0.03 on Fal. If you do not have a kit, you are buying an image model with extra adjectives. Put the logos, hex values, and three approved photographs in first. If the kit is a folder named final_v7_USE_THIS, Magnific cannot save you.
The “avoids the AI look” line in VentureBeat’s headline is marketing. The mechanism they describe is more boring and more useful: art direction before sampling, then a kit in Final. You can still get a plastic face. You just get it on-brand.
MCP availability means an agent can call the same meter. That is a governance problem as much as a creative one. If an intern’s agent can spend Max 4K at 1,000 credits a pop, set a cap before October 15 curiosity turns into a bill.
Freepik’s ghost is the install base
Unite.AI recaps the April 28, 2026 rebrand. Freepik started in 2010 in Málaga without venture capital, as a search engine for graphic resources, then grew into an AI shop across image, video, 3D, and audio. At rebrand it reported one million paid subscribers, 100 million monthly visits, $230 million in annual recurring revenue, and more than 290 enterprise teams. Those are company figures from April. They explain why Magnific can launch a model into an existing desktop app instead of a new login.
The desktop app is macOS and Windows. Unite.AI says it mirrors projects to a local folder with one-way sync. Launch week: seven days of unlimited Magnific One generation at 2K and 4K in that app, not counted against credits, through October 15, 2026. If you are going to decide whether Draft grids are usable, that is the window. After the 15th you are on the 180-credit sticker.
Tech in Asia adds a data claim: customer prompts, images, and Brand Kits are not used to train models. Other vendors publish similar sentences. If you are in the EU, the same piece notes the AI Act’s machine-readable marking requirement for generated content. Ask Magnific where the mark lives on a 2K PNG before you ship a campaign that cannot carry a hidden watermark politically.
Credit math for a real campaign, not a demo
Take a modest week: 10 Drafts you actually look at, 8 Finals at 2K High, 1 Final at 4K High, 0 Max. If Draft grids really cost one image, that is 10 + 8×180 + 250 = 1,690 credits plus whatever Draft’s “one image” means in your plan’s SKU. I cannot finish that equation without Magnific’s Draft credit row. VentureBeat did not print it. Ask support for Draft’s credit cost before you promise a CMO that exploration is free.
Max 4K at 1,000 credits is 12.5× a High 2K. Use it when a billboard file demands it. Do not use it to “see the quality.” 2K High is the seeing quality. 4K High at 250 is the next step. Max is a print vendor’s problem.
$0.12–$0.73 per image only holds if you empty the annual bucket. People who buy Pro Starter at $82.50 a month and then generate 20 images a quarter are paying a membership, not $0.12. Be honest in the spreadsheet. Unused credits are a tax.
Runway at $0.05–$0.08 and Flux at $0.03 will win any spreadsheet that ignores Brand Kit labor. Count the hours a designer currently spends restyling off-brand gens. If that is two hours a week, Magnific’s kit is competing with salary, not with Fal. If nobody restyles, buy Fal.
MCP is where this gets expensive without a human in the loop. A coding agent that “just makes a hero image” can burn Max 4K in a retry loop. Put a credit ceiling on the token. October 15 unlimited is the worst week to debug that loop.
What to actually try before the 15th
A procurement-friendly afternoon, using only what these three stories give you:
- Install the desktop app. Confirm local sync is one-way, so a bad generate does not overwrite the kit folder you care about.
- Build a Brand Kit from three real assets, not a Pinterest board.
- Run the same prompt in Draft at 4, 8, and 16. See whether 16 is noise.
- Promote one tile to Final at 2K High (180 credits after the trial).
- Run one Max 4K only if a print vendor asked for it. 1,000 credits is not a screensaver.
- Price the same prompt on Flux 2 Max through Fal and on GPT Image 1.5. Write the three dollar figures on paper.
If Final cannot hold a wordmark, you are not ready to cancel Midjourney. Unite.AI’s editing lines include “exact text reproduction.” That is an admission that text is still a special case. Test the wordmark. If it fails, your pipeline is still layout software plus a background model.
If you already standardized on Flux 2 Max because of last month’s war piece, Magnific One is a kit layer, not a reason to throw out the API. Run it where a designer currently babysits generations by hand. Leave batch product shots where $0.03 wins.
October 15 is a calendar date, not a personality. After that, 180 credits is the product.
Desktop versus web is a workflow choice Unite.AI actually specified: local one-way sync on macOS and Windows. If your brand kit lives in a DAM, syncing a mirror folder is fine. If your brand kit lives in Figma comments, the desktop app will not magically read those. Export three stills, put them in the kit, then generate. Mobile and MCP are listed by Tech in Asia as paid-plan surfaces. Use mobile for approval screenshots. Use MCP only after someone sets a budget. Web is enough for the Oct 15 trial if you refuse to install another app; you will miss the unlimited desktop offer Unite.AI tied to that install.
Freepik users already have a login. That is the distribution trick. It is also how a stock-photo account becomes an image-model bill without a new vendor review. Tell finance the legal name is Magnific and the meter is credits, not seats, before someone forwards an $82.50 Pro Starter receipt as “the Freepik plan.”
If the seven-day unlimited window is still open when you read this, use it on Brand Kit tests, not on random prompts. After October 15 you will pay 180 credits to learn the kit was empty.
